Patience
Music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert
Patience was set in a hotel lobby in the 1920s. I began with a research collage of patterns and images that I could incorporate into the design.

I then did an initial sketch, making the art deco style elevator doors the centerpiece of my design. I worked with other designers to choose paint and materials to add the necessary color and texture to the design.
​
The elevator doors were fully functional (controlled by a pulley system run by a stagehand) and the elevator dial was remote controlled to move according to what floors the characters were on.
​
(In true theatre fashion, the device happened to break the one performance it was filmed, so it does not move in the video below.)
